Drogba gives Chelsea advantage over Barca

Striker scores the only goal as battling Blues earn fine Champions League victory

Didier Drogba scores Chelsea's winner against Barcelona at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday

UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg

Chelsea 1-0 Barcelona

Didier Drogba was the star of a battling Chelsea display as the Blues earned a UEFA Champions League semi-final first-leg win over Catalan giants Barcelona.

Drogba struck shortly after half-time as he tapped in from Ramires' low cross to score the only goal of the match.

Barcelona dominated possession, but found Roberto di Matteo's side well-organised and tough to break down.

Alexis Sanchez came close for the visitors with a first-half effort which rebounded off the bar, while Petr Cech saved well from Cesc Fabregas and Lionel Messi.

Cech also produced a good diving stop late on to parry Carles Puyol's header while in stoppage time Sergio Busquets blazed over after Pedro's shot rebounded off the post.

Chelsea take their slender lead to the Camp Nou for the second leg on Tuesday April 24th.
