Analysis reveals volume of January business in recent years in Barclays Premier League

Everton's signing of Nikica Jelavic was one of this year's bigger deadline day moves

The 2012 January transfer window has, as ever, prompted a flurry of activity in the Barclays Premier League.

There was the usual last-minute rush for players by several clubs, although accountants Deloitte have estimated a total spend of around £60m for this year's window - lower than many previous years.

But how many players usually make a move during the winter? Here is a breakdown of the business during the previous three January transfer windows.

January 2011

54 players were signed by Barclays Premier League clubs in total
20 were transferred within the Barclays Premier League
6 came from the Football League
2 came from non-league football
2 were free transfers
24 were from overseas
36 players left Barclays Premier League clubs

January 2010

48 players were signed by Barclays Premier League clubs in total
16 were transferred within the Barclays Premier League
5 came from the Football League
1 came from non-league football
10 were free transfers
16 were from overseas
39 players left Barclays Premier League clubs

January 2009

59 players were signed by Barclays Premier League clubs in total
27 were transferred within the Barclays Premier League
7 came from the Football League
0 were free transfers or signings from non-league football
25 came from overseas
40 players left Premier League clubs

Overall (for January transfer windows 2009-11)

£400m was the approximate total spend across the three windows
161
players joined Barclays Premier League clubs
115 players left the Barclays Premier League
59.6% of signings were domestic
40.4% of signings were from overseas
39.1% of deals were between Barclays Premier League clubs
11.2% of deals saw players move up from the Football League
7.5% of deals involved free transfers
1.9% saw non-league players move into the Barclays Premier League

Notes:
'Domestic' means the transfer took place between Premier League and Football League clubs (English and Welsh clubs) - 'Foreign transfers' is a recognised definition used for players coming into the league from other professional leagues and therefore foreign in the eyes of FIFA.
Official figures for the 2012 January transfer window will be known later in February.
