After being the joint top-scorer in the Barclays Premier League the previous season Coventry City striker Dion Dublin was being pursued by a number of clubs.
Despite Coventry having accepted a bid from Blackburn Rovers, Dublin, who was keen to stay in the Midlands, rejected Rovers, as well as interest from Leeds United, allowing for John Gregory, the Aston Villa manager to get his man.
Dublin had an instant impact, scoring twice on his debut, at home to Tottenham Hotspur in a 3-2 victory. The next match he went one better getting a hat-trick in the 4-1 win away to Southampton.
After playing for England in midweek Dublin made it seven goals in three matches with a brace as Villa went down 4-2 at home to Liverpool.
In total over six seasons at Villa Park, Dublin scored 48 goals in 150 Barclays Premier League appearances.
