On this day in 1997: Di Canio seals Wednesday win

Looking back at Premier League history, we recall Sheffield Wednesday's late win over Everton

Premierleague.com rifles through the annals of the Barclays Premier League to find significant events.

4 October 1997 - Sheffield Wednesday 3-1 Everton

Paolo Di Canio capped off a flurry of four goals in the last 12 minutes of a thrilling finale as Sheffield Wednesday moved out of the Barclays Premier League relegation zone with a 3-1 win over fellow strugglers Everton.

The first half at Hillsborough was tightly contested and Everton had chances to take the lead after having the upper hand after the break, but Di Canio's fellow countryman Benito Carbone broke the deadlock on 78 minutes.

Carbone made it 2-0 from the penalty spot four minutes later before 18-year-old Everton forward Danny Cadamarteri scored his fourth goal in five games to give the visitors hope of a point. But the strike wasn't enough as Di Canio provided a composed finish from a through-ball by David Hirst to send the Toffees into the relegation zone.

The win proved to be an important one for the Owls as they finished four points above the Barclays Premier League drop zone. Everton secured safety at the expense of Bolton Wanderers on goal difference on a dramatic final day of the 1997/98 campaign.
