Premierleague.com rifles through the annals of the Barclays Premier League to find significant events.

On this day: 4 March 1995 Man Utd 9-0 Ipswich Town

Andrew Cole became the first player in the history of the Barclays Premier League to score five goals in a match as Manchester United beat Ipswich Town 9-0.

Roy Keane opened the scoring at Old Trafford after 15 minutes before Cole struck twice as Ipswich went into the break 3-0 down at half-time. The United striker completed his hat-trick on 53 minutes before Mark Hughes struck twice. Cole, then Paul Ince scored as the floodgates opened and the former Newcastle United forward got his fifth three minutes before the end.

The score remains the biggest margin of victory in the competition. Tottenham Hotspur are the only other team have scored nine times in the Barclays Premier League, when beating Wigan Athletic 9-1 in November 2009. Jermain Defoe also scored five goals in that match and the feat has been achieved by Alan Shearer and Dimitar Berbatov, too.

The result kept Ipswich in the relegation zone and George Burley's team went down, finishing bottom. United stayed second in the table and Alex Ferguson eventually lost out to Blackburn Rovers on the final day of the season.
