Nolan scored the opening in the 26th minute when he knocked the ball over his head after Shola Ameobi had headed on a Joey Barton corner.

Ameobi was involved in the midfielder's second eight minutes later as he set free Jonas Gutierrez, whose shot was blocked. The ball then fell to Andy Carroll whose spectacular attempt fell to Nolan, who scored from close range.

In first-half stoppage time it was 3-0, as Ameobi tucked away a penalty awarded for a foul on Carroll by Titus Bramble, who was shown a straight red card.

Ameobi made it 4-0 in the 70th minute after Carroll's header struck the bar and five minutes later he flicked on a corner for Nolan to complete his treble.

Darren Bent scored a consolation goal from a corner in the final minute.

"It's difficult to pick out one player on a day which was very special for the team," said Newcastle manager Chris Hughton. "It would have been special for the back four and keeper to come away with a clean sheet but Sunderland are a handful up front and we defended well."

The result took Newcastle past Sunderland to seventh place in teh table while the visitors dropped to 11th, although by the end of the season the Black Cats finished the higher of the rival clubs, their 10th position leaving them two places above the Magpies.
