30 September 2006 – Robin van Persie volley beats Charlton

A stunning volley from Robin van Persie allowed Arsenal to claim a 2-1 win over Charlton Athletic at The Valley. The home side had taken the lead through Darren Bent but Van Persie equalised before half-time.

The winner four minutes after the break was a goal of stunning quality. Alex Hleb found Emmanuel Eboue down the right and the Ivorian’s first-time cross was met on the full by Van Persie running to the edge of the penalty area. Van Persie’s left-foot shot flew past Scott Carson into the Charlton net. It was enough to give Arsenal the win.

"It was the goal of a lifetime," Arsene Wenger, the Arsenal manager, said. “He's played for a long time and I'm not sure he's scored one like that.

"I feel the cross was fantastic from Emmanuel Eboue. Robin took the ball at full pace and full power and his technique and his movement were perfect. The ball looked like it would go over the bar so when it came down and in the corner it was unbelievable."
