On this day: Shay Given leaves Blackburn for Newcastle

On this day: 30 May 1997 Shay Given joins Newcastle from Blackburn

Newly appointed Newcastle United manager Kenny Dalglish made the Republic of Ireland goalkeeper one of his first signings at St James’ Park. Dalglish had been in charge of the 21-year-old at Blackburn Rovers, where he had played just twice in the Barclays Premier League

Given instantly became the No 1 at Newcastle and over the next 11-and-a-half seasons played 354 Barclays Premier League matches for the club. Given left on February 1 2009 to sign for Manchester City.
