Steve McManaman fired Liverpool into the lead after just two minutes
Robbie Fowler scores the first of two goals in four minutes to seal the match
Three goals in the opening eight minutes at Anfield were enough for Liverpool to beat Aston Villa the nearest rival to their third place in the Barclays Premier League.
Steve McManaman opened the scoring after two minutes and a brace from Robbie Fowler in the next six minutes stunned Brian Little’s team in one of the best starts for a club in the Barclays Premier League.
The victory reduced the gap between Roy Evans’s side and Manchester United to two points. They were unable to climb further that season, while Villa also remained in fourth.
