An early goal from Kevin Campbell was enough to give Everton a victory in a lively Merseyside derby at Anfield.
The Toffees went into the match on the back of victories over Sheffield Wednesday and West Ham United and they made a fine start to the derby when Campbell fired home from Francis Jeffers’s flick with only four minutes on the clock.
Jeffers spurned two chances to extend the lead before both sides were reduced to 10 men when Jeffers and Liverpool goalkeeper Sander Westerveld were dismissed for fighting.
Reds defender Steve Staunton took over in goal and he saved well from Abel Xavier, while at the other end Paul Gerrard produced a fine stop to deny Eric Meier.
The home side were left with nine men when Steve Gerrard saw red for a challenge on Campbell in injury time.
The win moved Everton up to sixth place in the table, with Liverpool staying in 12th. However, Gerard Houllier's men recovered well to finish in fourth, while Everton ended up in 13th.
This victory is the last time that the Toffees have triumphed at Anfield.
