27 Feb 2011: West Ham 3-1 Liverpool

A superb individual display from Scott Parker helped West Ham United move off the bottom of the Barclays Premier League table with a win over Liverpool.

The midfielder’s man-of-the-match performance began with an excellent opening goal to set the tone after 22 minutes. Parker, who was voted as the 2011 Player of the Year by the Football Writers’ Association, expertly guided the ball past the fingers of Jose Reina from the edge of the box with his right boot.

Demba Ba, who signed for West Ham from Hoffenheim a month earlier, made it 2-0 before Glen Johnson gave Kenny Dalglish’s side hope of a comeback with a goal six minutes from full-time against his former team. Carlton Cole wrapped up the points in injury time as the Hammers secured their sixth win of the Premier League season.

Despite the victory Avram Grant’s West Ham could not avoid relegation in the 2010/11 campaign, finishing seven points off safety in 20th place. The defeat kept Liverpool in sixth place, where they were ot finish the season.

Under the guidance of Sam Allardyce, who replaced Grant as manager in the summer of 2011, West Ham bounced straight back with promotion through the Championship play-offs. They are at present 14th in the Barclays Premier League.
