Premierleague.com rifles through the annals of the Barclays Premier League to find significant events.
Tottenham Hotspur beat off competition from Newcastle United, among others, to the signing of Dynamo Zagreb midfielder Luka Modric.
The 22-year-old Croat, who had won 20 caps for the national side, attended the Spurs’ match against and would join in the summer after a medical and a work permit was granted.
"If it goes through we will be delighted,” Juande Ramos, the Spurs coach, said. “I've seen him several times for his club. The club always try to sign good players. We always want to improve the squad and show our ambition."
Modric was delighted with the move to White Hart Lane. "I'm happy to be joining such a big club. It will be a real pleasure to play in the English league.
"It is the best in Europe, with three English clubs in the semi-finals of the Champions League."
On the day the agreement was announced Modric attended Spurs’ 1-1 draw at home to Bolton Wanderers.
Modric made his Barclays Premier League debut away to Middlesbrough and went on to make 127 appearances for Spurs, scoring 13 goals. The Spurs fans voted him their player of the year for the 2011/12 season.
The player signed for Real Madrid in the summer of 2012.
