Premierleague.com rifles through the annals of the Barclays Premier League to find significant events.
A third brace in a row from Kevin Campbell helped to ease Everton’s fears of relegation while increasing those of Charlton Athletic.
This was also the third consecutive victory for Walter Smith’s team after they had fallen into the bottom three of the Barclays Premier League and it began with Don Hutchison giving them the lead after 24 minutes.
The lead was doubled by Campbell before the break and the forward who had joined from Nottingham Forest the month before got his second after being set up by Francis Jeffers.
The 18-year-old forward got the fourth before Graham Stuart scored for Charlton from the penalty spot against his former side.
Campbell registered nine goals in eight appearances that season, the remainder of his goals after the Charlton match coming with a hat-trick against West Ham United. He went on to score 45 times in 145 matches for the Toffees.
While Everton avoided relegation, Alan Curbishley’s Charlton went down after finishing 18th on 36 points.
