Premierleague.com rifles through the annals of the Barclays Premier League to find significant events.

15 June 1999 - Charlton defender Danny Mills moves to Elland Road

Danny Mills stayed in the Barclays Premier League by joining Leeds United from relegated Charlton Athletic.

Mills had only been at The Valley for just over a season, after starting his career with Norwich City.

“I had a great year at Charlton and am very grateful for what they have done for me but now I have come to a massive club and one that is going from strength to strength,” the 22-year-old said.

Leeds chairman Peter Ridsdale said: “Danny represents an excellent acquisition. He is one for the future and at an age which fits into the type of young, skilful team which we are trying to build here.”

Mills spent five seasons at Elland Road during a largely successful time for Leeds, winning 19 England caps during his stay at the club.

They finished in the top five of the Barclays Premier League in each of his first three seasons and reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League in the 2000/01 campaign. Having made 33 Barclays Premier League appearances during 2002/03, he was loaned to Middlesbrough for the following season.

Leeds were relegated at the end of that season and Mills left the club on a free transfer.

He joined Manchester City and during five years there also spent time on loan at Hull City, Charlton Athletic and Derby County. Mills was released in the summer of 2009 and retired shortly afterwards to pursue a career in the media.
