Premierleague.com rifles through the annals of the Barclays Premier League to find significant events.

On this day 13 September 2004 - Newcastle hire Souness

Grame Souness was confirmed as the new manager of Newcastle United after a poor start to the 2004/05 season had led to the exit of Bobby Robson. The hiring of Souness from Blackburn Rovers was confirmed two days after the two sides had met in the Barclays Premier League.

"I've come to a club with so much in place to make it successful," Souness said. "I'm inheriting a fabulous situation. Usually when you take over a club it's in turmoil, but this one is in good nick.

"The chairman has done a wonderful job, the finances are in good shape. The board and Sir Bobby Robson have got some great players in here. The supporters are a throwback, screaming the team on. With one, two or three additions and some luck, we can deliver what we want."

After winning his first two matches, Souness struggled to make a success that season and the team finished 14th. There was no significant improvement the next campaign and Souness was out with a record of 16 victories from 56 Barclays Premier League matches.
