13 October 2001: Bolton Wanders 0-4 Newcastle United

Newcastle United profited from Bolton Wanderers’ goalkeeping crisis to earn an emphatic victory at the Reebok Stadium.

After Nolberto Solano had given Bobby Robson’s team a 41st-minute lead, the home side were reduced to 10 men when Jussi Jaaskelainen was sent off for handling outside the area a quarter of an hour after the break.

With their reserve goalkeeper Steve Banks missing due to a midweek injury Bolton had to put midfielder Bo Hansen between the posts and his first act was to retrieve the ball from his net after Laurent Robert converted the free-kick from Jaaskelainen’s foul.

Alan Shearer scored the third 10 minutes later before setting up Craig Bellamy for the fourth.

“The sending-off had a dramatic effect on the game,” said Robson whose team climbed to fourth, where they finished the season. As for Bolton, having led the table after the opening three matches, the defeat dropped them to eighth and Sam Allardyce’s team were to fall further, flirting with relegation before finishing 16th.
