Leeds United consolidated their place in the top four of the Barclays Premier League with victory over Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.
The visitors had gone into the match on the back of four straight wins and goals from Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and David Hopkin ensured they recorded their best winning streak in six years.
Leeds had the perfect start when Hasselbaink fired into the bottom corner past Pavel Srnicek on four minutes following Ian Harte's free kick.
And the three points were sealed 18 minutes from time when Hasselbaink's fine pass played in Hopkin who fired home at the second time of asking.
"We controlled it too easily to be at our best," said Leeds manager David O'Leary afterwards. "But confidence and spirit are excellent. We are ready to walk on fire."
The victory extended Leeds' gap over fifth-placed Aston Villa to seven points and their fine League form continued for the rest of the campaign. They only lost one more match that season and ended up in fourth to seal UEFA Cup qualification.
For Wednesday, the Leeds defeat came in the middle of a five-match losing streak. However, they had strong end to the campaign, losing two of their final seven matches, to finish in 12th place.
