West Ham United strengthened their squad ahead of their return to the Barclays Premier League with the capture of experienced goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen.
"When the opportunity was offered to come to West Ham I didn't think twice"
Jaaskelainen, then 37, had been with Bolton Wanderers for 15 years and during his time at the club had became widely recognised as one of the most reliable goalkeepers in the League. His time at Bolton, however, was coming to an end with the club's relegation from the top flight as well as the emergence at the Reebok Stadium of Adam Bogdan.
The Hammers, meanwhile, back in the Premier League after the Championship play-off final victory over Blackpool, were in search of a first-choice keeper following Rob Green's decision to leave the club.
Jaaskelainen signed a one-year deal, with the option of another 12 months, to team up again with former Bolton manager Sam Allardyce.
"I'm delighted to be joining West Ham United. After spending 15 years in Bolton it's a great new challenge and I'm really looking forward to it," he said.
"Everything has happened really quickly. When the opportunity was offered to come to West Ham I didn't think twice and I just told my agent to sort it out as quickly as possible."
The Finland international enjoyed a superb first season in the capital, starting every League match as West Ham secured a top-half finish and triggering an extension clause in his contract.
Jaaskelainen has now made 417 Barclays Premier Legaue appearances.
