On this day: Coventry stun Spurs to stay up

On this day 11 May 1997: Tottenham Hotspur 1-2 Coventry City

Coventry City’s continual presence in the Barclays Premier for more than 30 years looked to be ending when a defeat by Derby County on the penultimate day of the season dropped them into the relegation zone, with a daunting trip to White Hart Lane to come.

When Dion Dublin and Paul Williams put Gordon Strachan’s side 2-0 up they dared to dream but still it was not enough as Sunderland, who at the start of the day were two points ahead and with a better goal difference were, drawing away to Wimbledon.

Things got more nervous for Coventry’s fans when Paul McVeigh pulled a goal back for Spurs just before half-time. But Coventry hung on and they started to celebrate when Wimbledon struck a late winner to send Sunderland down.
