On this day: 10 June 2001 - Gustavo Poyet joins Tottenham

Having already signed striker Teddy Sheringham from Manchester United, new Tottenham Hotspur manager Glenn Hoddle dipped into the transfer market again to snap up Gustavo Poyet from Chelsea.

The then 33-year-old midfielder arrived at White Hart Lane – in the same summer as Goran Bunjevcevic and Christian Ziege - having spent four seasons at Chelsea, where he had won the FA Cup and the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup and scored 36 goals from 105 Barclays Premier League appearances.

"Wherever he has been involved he has won things," said Hoddle. "He has a terrific eye for a goal and even on the television screens you can see his love for the game.

"He has a burning ambition and that is what the club needs - ambition. We have some terrific youngsters but we need some experience."

Poyet made a total of 82 League appearances for Spurs, scoring 18 goals, before ending his playing career in 2004. He returned to White Hart Lane in 2007, as assistant to manager Juande Ramos, helping the club win the Carling Cup.
