10 December 1994 - Blackburn Rovers 3-2 Southampton

Matt Le Tissier scored a superb solo goal but it was not enough to prevent Southampton from slipping to defeat at Ewood Park.

Le Tissier had scored his side’s first goal in the 65th minute before his moment of magic. He collected the ball just outside the centre circle, glided past Mark Atkins and Tim Sherwood and unleashed a dipping 35-yard thunderbolt that gave Rovers goalkeeper Tim Flowers no chance.

Atkins had put opened the scoring for Blackburn in the sixth minute when he volleyed home from the edge of the area after a clearance had fallen to him. Seven minutes later it was 2-0 as Alan Shearer scored at the second attempt after Bruce Grobbelaar had saved his penalty.

After the break, Sherwood hit a Saints post from close range before Le Tissier scored his first, when he collected a pass, took one touch and fired home from just outside the area.

Shearer restored Blackburn’s two-goal advantage from 12 yards with his 19th goal of the season after a pass from Graeme Le Saux, who had run half the length of the field.

Le Tissier halved the deficit with his wonder goal but it was Blackburn, who collected the three points which kept them top of the Barclays Premier League table.

That is where they finished the season as Rovers won the League title for the first time in 81 years while Southampton finished 10th.
