Premierleague.com rifles through the annals of the Barclays Premier League to find significant events.
Chelsea announced that they had signed Claude Makelele from Real Madrid just minutes before the transfer window was due to shut. The 30-year-old France midfielder signed a four-year deal to become the 11th signing by Claudio Ranieri since the takeover of Roman Abramovich earlier in the summer.
"Everbody is talking about Chelsea,” Makelele told Chelsea TV. “Real Madrid is no different to anyone. There's lots of interest, everybody is talking about the ambition of the London club, Chelsea."
Makelele became a key component of the Chelsea side that Jose Mourinho inherited a year later and took to two Barclays Premier League titles, in 2004/05 and the following season.
In total he played in 144 Barclays Premier League matches for Chelsea, scoring two goals.
