Eden Hazard scored twice in a superb individual display as Chelsea beat bottom side Sunderland 4-3 in a thrilling match at the Stadium of Light.

The hosts had taken an early lead but the Blues hit back and earned a victory which kept them second in the Barclays Premier League table and left Sunderland bottom.

Sunderland made two changes with Jozy Altidore and Jack Colback replacing Steven Fletcher and Sebastian Larsson while Chelsea introduced Frank Lampard and Willian for Michael Essien and Oscar.

Two of those alterations paid early dividends with Altidore putting the hosts ahead in the 14th minute from inside the penalty area after Colback found him from Andrea Dossena's free-kick and Lampard equalising three minutes later when he headed home Juan Mata's cross from close range.

Hazard put Chelsea ahead for the first time in the 36th minute when he ran at the Sunderland defence and drove in a low shot.

Sunderland levelled shortly after half-time when John O'Shea swept the ball home from Craig Gardner's corner. Fernando Torres missed a good chance to restore Chelsea's lead but the visitors did score three for the third consecutive Premier League match when Hazard swapped passes with Lampard before rounding two defenders and firing past Vito Mannone.

The Blues established a two-goal advantage when a low cross from substitute Demba Ba went in off home defender Phil Bardsley, who atoned almost immediately by scoring from a corner.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho: "It was by far our best performance away from home. We played fantastic football, we created chances, we had the ball, we were creative and dynamic. We had a special Hazard but also Mata and Willian in front of our midfield players played a fantastic match.

"The performance was great, individually and collectively. I don't normally like to praise individual performances but tonight I have to because Eden was absolutely fantastic. We played well defensively, we always had control of the situation. We conceded ridiculous goals. You play so well away from home and you score away from home, (but) you have to concentrate until the end (because) we conceded three poor goals. To concede three goals is ridiculous."

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet: "Eden Hazard was outstanding.

"I am sure, I can tell you after playing Chelsea that they are going to be champions. When you score three goals at home to a team like Chelsea then you expect something from it.

"I'm sad and I will go home a little bit disappointed."
