Jason Puncheon's first-half penalty earned a point for Crystal Palace as they drew with 10-man Norwich City at Selhurst Park.

Palace went into the game having lost all 13 Barclays Premier League matches in which they had conceded first this season and they had to do things the hard way again after Bradley Johnson gave Norwich a 39th-minute lead.

But they headed into the break level when Puncheon converted from the spot after Mile Jedinak had been fouled in the area.

The home side had the better of the second half but after Cameron Jerome had missed a good chance to put them ahead, they could not find a way through Norwich's resolute defence.

Norwich City's Leroy Fer was dismissed for a second bookable offence but the hosts could not make the most of their man advantage.

Both managers made two changes from their respective narrow defeats at the hands of the Manchester clubs last time out, with Kagisho Dikgacoi and Marouane Chamakh returning for Palace, while Michael Turner and Steven Whittaker came back into the Norwich defence.

After a slow start, a slip by Canaries left-back Martin Olsson in the 30th minute presented Palace with a chance, as Puncheon stole possession and crossed to the back post but Jerome shot over from close range.

Norwich gradually grew into the match and six minutes before the break they made Palace pay for not capitalising on their superiority. Gary Hooper chased down a long ball and cut a pass back to the edge of the area for Johnson, who clipped a shot in off the right-hand post.

Fer then conceded a penalty for pushing Jedinak, with Puncheon burying the resulting spot-kick.

Both sides created good chances early in the second half. First, Nathan Redmond forced Julian Speroni into a good stop from a tight angle before Jerome shot over after Norwich did not clear a corner.

Palace were well on top as the match entered its final half-hour but Pulis’ men could not to break down the visitors' defence.

Norwich did fashion a rare chance in the 68th minute when Hooper controlled the ball and turned on the edge of the area, before Speroni got down to make a crucial save from his shot.

Fer received a second yellow card with eight minutes to go for a tackle on Jedinak but they could not make their man advantage count.

Crystal Palace manager Tony Pulis: "I think [referee] Mike Dean did really well to get the game on. I have played in worse conditions, but they were difficult today.

"I thought we controlled the game better in the second half. You need a bit of quality to win games, but maybe we needed a bit more patience and time.

"You need to be resilient. The next few weeks will be big for us as we try to add to the squad. The next few weeks could determine our season.

"We will hopefully bring one or two more in with a bit of quality, but with the same desire as the players we already have."

Norwich manager Chris Hughton: "Having taken the lead, you want to go in at half-time having secured that lead, so it was disappointing how it went.

"At the break I was really disappointed that we weren’t in front. It wasn’t a great performance but certainly if there a team in that first half who looked like they could carve something from general play, then it would have been us.

"I think the way that it went having lost Michael Turner and having Leroy Fer sent off, and with the way that they play – a very direct style in these conditions – then in the end I was pleased with the draw."
