Stoke City beat Manchester United for the first time in the Barclays Premier League thanks to two goals from Charlie Adam.

In a first half largely dominated by the visitors, Stoke went ahead after 38 minutes thanks to a deflected Adam free-kick, which hit United's Michael Carrick on the edge of the area and flew beyond the reach of David de Gea. Robin van Persie equalised two minutes after half-time but Adam earned the Potters' first win over United since 1984 with an unstoppable effort from outside the area after 52 minutes. It sealed United's eighth league defeat of the season and their third straight loss on the road in all competitions.

United manager David Moyes started the attacking trio of Juan Mata, Van Persie and Wayne Rooney for the first time as they looked to claim a third victory over Stoke this season.

While United were able to field a full-strength forward line, Moyes was given a defensive injury headache just 10 minutes in when Jonny Evans was replaced by Rafael Da Silva having suffered what appeared to be a hamstring problem. Rooney had the first chance of the match, turning and firing wide inside the area on 14 minutes after Patrice Evra's cross from the left.

From there United began to pile on the pressure and Van Persie was the next to go close with an effort that deflected wide past Asmir Begovic's right post. Stoke survived the pressure and Phil Jones had to produce a well-timed tackle to stop Jonathan Walters having a shot. Van Persie went close for the visitors when his close-range header took a deflection off Glenn Whelan and crept over the crossbar.

Seven minutes before the break, Adam's free-kick, with the help of an inadvertent Carrick deflection, put the home side ahead. Things got worse for United before half-time when Jones was taken off injured after a mid-air clash of heads with Walters.

Straight after the break the visitors were level when Van Persie angled a finish past Begovic following Mata's carefully weighted through-ball. Parity lasted only five minutes before Adam produced a magnificent left-footed strike to restore Stoke's lead with his sixth league goal of the season.

With time running out United threw everything forward, and Begovic produced a stunning save in the seven minutes of added time to deny Rooney from a free-kick. Stoke, who were in the relegation zone prior to kick-off, held on for their first league win since December to move up to 11th in the table.

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes: "To a man, we were fantastic. We got a little bit of luck with the first goal which we have felt we haven't had in recent months but, throughout the game, every one of my players put heart and soul into what we were trying to do.

"I was not surprised by Charlie Adam's second goal because, when the ball drops to him anywhere outside the area he has the capacity to do that. In training he hits it clean and true and today it was such a good strike that the keeper was never going to get anywhere near it."

Manchester United manager David Moyes: "I don't know what we have to do to win. We were extremely unlucky, we played well in difficult conditions but we have lost to one wicked deflection and one worldy.

"We should have been out of sight with the amount of opportunities we had today and we only have ourselves to blame."
