Chelsea out but not down, insists Benitez

Chelsea manager pleased with 'character' shown in 6-1 victory despite Champions League exit

Juan Mata scores in Chelsea's 6-1 thrashing of Nordsjæland

Rafael Benitez praised the "character and attitude" of his side after Chelsea completed an emphatic 6-1 rout of Nordsjælland only to miss out on the UEFA Champions League knockout stage.

Fernando Torres scored twice, while David Luiz, Juan Mata, Gary Cahill and Oscar also got on the scoresheet. They still didn't qualify for the round of 16 of the competition that they won last season.

Juventus's 1-0 defeat of Shakhtar Donetsk meant these two teams progressed at Chelsea's expense, leaving the west Londoners with the consolation of a place in the UEFA Europa League.

"The other game was out of our hands; we just had to do our job," said Benitez. "As a manager, you have to be pleased with the performance: 32 attempts, 18 on target, six goals.
