Newcastle United have completed the signing of Montpellier defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa on a five-and-a-half-year deal.

The 23-year-old, who has three caps for France, is the club’s second signing from France this window after right-back Mathieu Debuchy joined from Lille.

"It is an honour to be able to come to Newcastle United and have the chance to play in the Premier League," Yanga-Mbiwa, who will wear the No 13 shirt, told the Newcastle website.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew was delighted with the signing. "He is a good age for us but has plenty of experience at club and international level."
