Robin van Persie scored three times for United
Robin van Persie made up for missing a penalty with a hat-trick with two late goals as Manchester United came from behind to beat Southampton at St Mary's Stadium.
The Holland striker equalised for United after Rickie Lambert had headed Southampton in the lead. He had another chance to level the score after Morgan Schneiderlin had put Southampton back in front, but his chipped penalty attempt was saved by Kelvin Davis.
But Van Persie made no mistake when a Rio Ferdinand header hit a post and grabbed the winner with a header from a corner.
The Dutchman’s former side Arsenal scored their first goals of the season by beating Liverpool 2-0 at Anfield. Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla got their first goals for their new club. Liverpool’s 17-year-old Raheem Sterling came closest to scoring for the home side when his shot hit a post in the first half.
In Sunday’s other match, Hatem Ben Arfa’s fierce shot rescued a point for Newcastle United after Ciaran Clark had headed Aston Villa into the lead at St James' Park.
