League stars shine for their countries on a busy night of international action

Fulham's Clint Dempsey was the star for the USA, who beat Italy on Wednesday

A number of stars from the Barclays Premier League proved just how good they are on the world stage on Wednesday night.

Gary Cahill of Chelsea and Manchester United's Ashley Young both scored for England against the Netherlands at Wembley - although former Chelsea man Arjen Robben was the Dutch star as the visitors won 3-2.

Fulham's Clint Dempsey scored as the USA won 1-0 in Italy - the first time the Americans have ever beaten the Italians.

Sebastian Larsson of Sunderland hit two as Sweden won 3-1 in Croatia, while Florent Malouda of Chelsea scored in France's 2-1 win in Germany.

David Silva (Man City) scored for Spain, Simon Cox (West Brom) scored for the Republic of Ireland and Christophe Berra (Wolves) netted for Scotland.
