Robin van Persie celebrates a hat-trick that helps Man Utd win the Premier League title

Manchester United won the Barclays Premier League title last night with a Robin van Persie hat-trick completing a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa.

The win means Man Utd are 16 points clear of Manchester City, who are in second and have five matches left to play. This is their 13th Premier League title, since the competition started in 1992, and their 20th league win at the top level of English football.

Robin van Persie made sure that Sir Alex Ferguson's team got the win they needed with a first half hat-trick, including a brilliant volley from outside the box, against Aston Villa, who are three points above the relegation zone in 17th place.

After winning his first ever Premier League title, former Arsenal forward van Persie said: "I am very happy but it is weird. I had to wait so long for my first title. It is a great feeling. It is a fantastic team and fantastic players."
