FA Cup review: Demba Ba hits brace as Chelsea cruise

A round-up of the Premier League clubs in action in the third round of the FA Cup

Demba Ba scores his second goal and Chelsea's fourth against Southampton

Chelsea’s defence of the FA Cup began comfortably as they eased past the difficult opening challenge of a trip to Southampton as Demba Ba scored twice on his debut in the third-round tie.

Southampton went ahead in the 22nd minute through Jay Rodriguez but Ba, who joined from Newcastle United a day earlier, equalised 10 minutes before the break. Chelsea led 2-1 at half time, thanks to Victor Moses, and sealed the win with another goal from Ba and strikes from Branislav Ivanovic and Frank Lampard.

Manchester United needed an injury-time goal from substitute Robin van Persie to stay in the competition as a West Ham United team inspired by Joe Cole, on his debut, came close to knocking out the league leaders.

Tom Cleverley had put Sir Alex Ferguson’s side in front but it was immediately cancelled out by James Collins’s header from Cole’s cross. West Ham took the lead in carbon-copy fashion through Cole crossing to Collins to head in and looked to be on course for victory until Van Persie took Ryan Giggs’s pass and finished calmly.
