Christian Benteke scores past Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet

A Christian Benteke hat-trick helped Aston Villa earn a 6-1 win over Sunderland to move them five points clear of the relegation zone in the Barclays Premier League.

Benteke, from Belgium, has now scored 18 Premier League goals since joining Villa in August 2012. Ron Vlaar, Andreas Weimann and Gabriel Agbonlahor also scored.

Danny Rose scored Sunderland's goal, but they also had a Stephane Sessegnon sent off in the second half.

Villa are now on 37 points, the same amount as Sunderland, and they are five points ahead of Wigan Athletic in the relegation zone. Wigan have four games left, while Villa and Sunderland have three.
