How are referees trained and assessed?

Referees undergo a comprehensive training and fitness programme.

Their fitness levels are monitored regularly to ensure they are fit and healthy enough to referee Barclays Premier League matches.

The Professional Games Match Officials (PGMO), the body which employs all referees, monitors and scrutinises the performances of the select group referees, reviewing individual performance with each referee in detail, in a number of different ways.

The aim is to improve their performances from week to week.
