Aston Villa have made their third signing of the summer with the capture of Kieran Richardson. The 29-year-old left back has signed a two-year deal at Villa with a further year's option after leaving Fulham.

Villa manager Paul Lambert believes Richardson's pace, versatility will help the side as well as his experience, with 232 appearances in the Barclays Premier League during 12 seasons for Manchester United, West Bromwich Albion, Sunderland and Fulham.

"Kieran will complement many of the players here well with what he brings," Lambert told avfc.co.uk. "He will add pace, a great deal of experience and he knows the Barclays Premier League. He's played a lot of games for a lad who has yet to turn 30.

"The grounding he gained at Manchester United has stood him in good stead and he knows what it is to compete in this league and to win things and that's important. I'm delighted he's joined us and we're really looking forward to working with him."

Richardson will be reunited with Roy Keane, the new Villa assistant manager who signed him as Sunderland manager in 2007, and the defender is looking forward to appearing for Villa at home.

"Villa Park itself has always been my favourite stadium out of all of the stadiums in which I’ve played in the Premier League,” he said. “It’s got great atmosphere, the fans are magnificent and I’m really looking forward to playing here. I know I'm going to love it."

Richardson joined Manchester United at 17 from West Ham United and made 41 Barclays Premier League appearances, including 15 in the 2006/07 title-winning campaign. For the second half of the 2004/05 season he was loaned to West Bromwich Albion and played a key role as the Baggies became the first team to avoid relegation after being bottom of the Barclays Premier League table at Christmas.

He signed for Sunderland in July 2007, playing 134 Barclays Premier League matches and scoring 14 goals. Richardson moved to Fulham in August 2012 and played 45 matches in the Barclays Premier League, scoring five goals. He has also earned eight England caps.

Richardson joins Philippe Senderos and Joe Cole as Lambert’s signings for the 2014/15 season. He will join training with his new team-mates as they prepare for their pre-season friendlies, which start with a trip to Mansfield Town on 17 July. For Villa’s full pre-season fixture list, click here.

Lambert’s team start their 2014/15 Barclays Premier League campaign away to Stoke City on the weekend starting 16 August.
