After making significant improvements to their health and lifestyle thanks to Latics in the Community’s Wigan Fit Fans project, a group of supporters got to meet Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez recently as a reward.

The volunteers had completed a 12-week programme at the Montrose Skills Hub, where they participated in football and sport sessions and were given advice on issues such as weight management, healthy eating and how to make physical activity part of your everyday life.

"It’s fantastic that the guys have been working with the Trust to get in shape"

Having successfully completed the course the men were presented with a Wigan Athletic home shirt by Martinez. “It’s fantastic that the guys have been working with the Trust to get in shape,” said Martinez. “January is the time of year when everyone starts thinking about what they eat, drink and whether to take part in more sport.

“Hopefully, the Fit Fans scheme will inspire more men to do so and I’m sure everyone who takes part will find it beneficial.”

Wigan Fit Fans is a three-year project funded by the Premier League PFA Community Fund and is open to men over the age of 25.

The scheme is also supported by NHS Ashton, Leigh and Wigan and the Bridgewater Community Healthcare NHS, who provide a Health Trainer to work on the project alongside coaches from the Community Trust.

Ian Abernethy from Goose Green in Wigan lost over a stone in weight during through the Fit Fans course. “Fit Fans has been fantastic and has helped me lose weight and make some important changes to my life,” he said. “It was great to meet Roberto and also for him to give us a Latics shirt – especially as it was a smaller one than it would have been three months ago.”
