Manchester City ended their away drought with an exciting victory at The Hawthorns.

City have a 100% home record from their seven Barclays Premier League matches so far this season but had only won one of their six matches on the road.

The visitors received a pre-match boost when captain Vincent Kompany made his comeback after a two-month injury lay-off.

The match was delayed by 15 minutes because of traffic problems but City made a fast start when Sergio Aguero gave them a ninth-minute lead by converting a cutback from Pablo Zabaleta.

Aguera was involved in City's second in the 24th minute when he combined with Samir Nasri to set up Alexksandar Kolarov whose cross was turned in by Yaya Toure on his 150th appearance for the club.

Boaz Myhill denied Aguero another goal with a fingertip save before Fernandinho volleyed over the bar.

Toure made the match safe with a 74th minute penalty after Kolarov had been fouled by Claudio Yacob before West Brom staged a late comeback.

They scored in the 85th minute when Kolarov's clearance from Matej Vydra's centre hit his own prone goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon and went into the net.

And then substitute Victor Anichebe hit his first Albion goal in injury-time but City held on to end the day third in the table.

West Bromwich Albion head coach Steve Clarke: "They're a really, really good team. We wanted to stay in the game as long as possible but they managed to get themselves away with the two goals in the first half. That makes it difficult when you're playing against a good team because you can risk a little, but if you risk too much you end up getting serious damage to your goal difference.

"We tried our best to get back into the game in the second half. I think even in the first half we had some moments and opportunities where we could have created something but didn't quite. It was a game where it had to go 2-1, at any stage in the second half, and that would have given us a fighting chance.

"The third goal with the penalty was a bad goal to concede and that more or less killed it. But credit to our players because we kept going and we got our reward at the end with two late goals which, in my opinion, puts a fair reflection on the balance of the play."

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini: "I think we played really well but in other games we played as well as we played. For some reason we didn't score two goals as we did (in the first half). We had also a lot more chances to score. It was, really, 45 minutes without one error.

"I think it was not so close a match as the score says but all of us were maybe thinking of the next game before we finished this one and in football you are never finished. They scored two goals in the last four minutes and that is why it's 3-2 but I think that we had more advantage in the whole game."

"We're not trying to send a message, we're trying to add points. That is more important. All the other teams have important games. For our team it was very important to win away and we will try and do it also on Saturday before we play against Arsenal at home."
