Goalkeeper Asmir Begovic sensationally opened the scoring after 13 seconds before Southampton hit back to secure a 1-1 draw at Stoke City.

In windy conditions for the Barclays Premier League match at the Britannia Stadium, a clearance from Begovic bounced over opposite number Artur Boruc to give Stoke a remarkable early lead.

Southampton had the better of the game for large periods, however, and equalised before the break when Jay Rodriguez converted a teasing cross from James Ward-Prowse.

The visitors threatened to grab a winner in the second half but both sides had to settle for a point.

Southampton are now unbeaten in eight matches, while Stoke have gone seven games without a victory in the league.

Begovic is the fifth goalkeeper to score in the Premier League and follows in the footsteps of Peter Schmeichel, Brad Friedel, Paul Robinson and Tim Howard.

Glenn Whelan replaced Wilson Palacios in the only alteration from Stoke's last league outing at Manchester United.

Southampton named an unchanged starting line-up, with striker Pablo Daniel Osvaldo missing out once again due to a knock.

Many supporters had yet to find their seat when Begovic got the game off to an unbelievable start, scoring with Stoke's second touch.

Buoyed by their stunning opener, the hosts applied further pressure and captain Ryan Shawcross spurned an opportunity in the ninth minute after a corner had been flicked into his path eight yards out.

Southampton defender Dejan Lovren missed a good chance three minutes later, heading wide from an inswinging corner from close range.

Things settled down thereafter as Southampton regained their composure and started to knock the ball around with increasing confidence.

The visitors' gradual improvement was rewarded four minutes before half-time when Rodriguez popped up unmarked at the far post to meet Ward-Prowse's delivery with a header into the ground that looped over Begovic.

Palacios replaced Whelan at the start of the second half and Stoke came close to retaking the lead in the 50th minute through Marko Arnautovic, only for Boruc to beat away the Austrian's powerful effort from 15 yards.

Southampton were soon enjoying prolonged spells of possession and Ward-Prowse curled a free-kick narrowly over and Mauricio Pochettino's men pushed forward as the game entered its closing stages.

Stoke, who saw Robert Huth booked for a body-check on Southampton substitute Gaston Ramirez, did offer more of a threat late on but could not carve out a clear-cut chance. Ramirez also saw an effort superbly saved by Begovic with the offside flag raised right at the death.

Stoke manager Mark Hughes: "Asmir’s goal, he will tell you that he meant it, obviously you don’t expect to score in those circumstances.

"It was a difficult day in terms of the conditions - of all the conditions you can play under, wind is the one that can affect a game the most. In fact it was harder to play with the wind than it was against it and I think that was borne out as Southampton played well in the first half and I think we played well in the second half.

"In the second half I thought we were better and we had a number of chances. They are a good side, I think we saw that today. They are well-organised and have good abilities so all-in-all we take a point in difficult curciumnstances. I don't think either team deserved more than that.

"As soon as it bounced (for the first goal) you knew the keeper was in trouble but you take those goals as they don’t happen very often and you are grateful when they do."

Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino: "We were very unlucky when we were 1-0 down in the first 15 seconds so it was hard to actually take that, but I think we showed we have good character and good personality and we actually did well after that.

"It was just an unlucky play in what was a tough match and we did our best and showed very good character.

"It shows my team can take these heavy blows and really tough moments and we played really well - notwithstanding what happened in the first 15 seconds. At the same time we have to be prepared and know that these things happen so have to prepare for these things as well."
