Peter Crouch scored the winner as Stoke beat Aston Villa to climb above them in the Barclays Premier League table.

Substitute Adam broke the deadlock shortly after the break following good work from Crouch but Libor Kozak levelled.

Crouch then struck in the 70th minute to inflict a third straight defeat on his former club while Stoke are now unbeaten at home in six Premier League matches.

The Potters welcomed back Jonathan Walters after suspension and Ryan Shawcross following injury but on loan Stephen Ireland was not allowed to face his parent club.

Villa were without the suspended Gabby Agbonlahor but also dropped Christian Benteke, who has not scored since the middle of September.

The closest either side came to a goal in the first half was when Geoff Cameron's cross was tipped over the bar by visiting goalkeeper Brad Guzan.

Adam replaced Marko Arnautovic at half-time and within five minutes had put Stoke ahead. Crouch headed a long free-kick into his path and Adam beat Nathan Baker before scoring from close range.

Stoke were on top but Villa suddenly equalised when Kozak intercepted a misplaced back header from City defender Erik Peters and tucked the ball home.

However four minutes later Crouch netted the winner as he turned the ball in from close range after a cross by Cameron.

Crouch nearly made it three when his backheel hit the post before at the other end, Asmir Begovic tipped a Kozak volley over the bar to preserve Stoke's lead and the hosts held on to go 10th in the table.

Stoke manager Mark Hughes: "It was difficult for us in the first half. We were against the wind. We set our stall out in the second half when the wind was with us. Peter Crouch, among others, did well. He gave us a focal point and we scored two good goals.

“They got the leveller through an individual error but we responded and all in all a good afternoon.

"I felt we did enough to win the game. We are doing ok and going in the right direction. We want to kick on from this point onwards - we have worked hard in the first part of season and we need to continue that."

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert: "We were excellent in the first half. The wind was very strong but even in the second half we had chances.

"It was a very close game. We thought when we got it to 1-1 that we might have gone on.

"We will go again. I don't think we deserved to lose."
