Champions move two points clear of Arsenal, while Clarets and Hatters suffer costly defeats

Manchester City piled the pressure on Arsenal in the title race with a comfortable 4-0 win at Fulham to start the day.

The defending Premier League champions rarely looked in trouble at Craven Cottage as Josko Gvardiol continued his remarkable scoring run with the opener and the third goal, taking his tally to five goals in seven matches in all competitions.

These sandwiched Phil Foden’s 17th Premier League goal of the season, his best return in the competition, before Julian Alvarez converted a stoppage-time penalty.

The win sent City above Arsenal into first place on 85 points, two ahead of the Gunners, who need to beat Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday or else City can seal the title with a win at Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday.

City’s victory also ended Liverpool’s title hopes as they pulled seven points clear of Jurgen Klopp's third-place side.

Spurs loss confirms Burnley's relegation

At the bottom of the table, the remaining two relegation spots were all but confirmed ahead of Nottingham Forest’s 3-2 home defeat to Chelsea in the day's late match.

Burnley needed to win at Spurs to keep alive their hopes of staying up, but despite taking the lead, went down 2-1 in north London.

Luton Town are close to joining the Clarets back in the Championship after their 3-1 defeat at West Ham United.

While they could still match Forest’s points total of 29, the Hatters also need to overcome a swing of 12 goals in goal difference on the final day when they host Fulham, while Forest travel to Burnley.

Spurs’ turnaround victory kept alive their hopes of overhauling Aston Villa for a top-four finish.

They are four points behind Villa, who host Liverpool on Monday. Defeat for Villa and a win for Spurs at home to Man City on Tuesday evening would reduce the gap to a point on the final day.

Newcastle United failed to strengthen their hopes of European football next season with a 1-1 draw at home to Brighton & Hove Albion.

The point leaves Eddie Howe's side sixth, which is guaranteed at least a place in the UEFA Europa Conference League but could be worth a Europa League spot. However, Chelsea's win at Forest takes them level with Newcastle on 57 points.

If Man Utd beat Arsenal on Sunday, they too, will reach the 57-point mark, but with an inferior goal difference to Newcastle and Chelsea.

It makes Newcastle's trip to Old Trafford on Wednesday all the more important.
